The 2022 Report of the Workshop on the use of collecting bags in shrimp fisheries (WKCB) is now available on the WKCB community page.
The North East Atlantic Fisheries Commission (NEAFC) seeks ICES advice to identify and detail the collecting bag shrimp trawl fishery in the NEAFC Regulatory Area (ICES subareas 1 and 2) and to assess the impact on species caught and bycaught. In response to the NEAFC request, the report of the Workshop on the use of Collecting bags in shrimp fisheries (WKCB) aims to investigate the availability of information and data to fully evaluate the impact of the use of collecting bags on the retention of catch and bycatch, e.g. size, and spatiotemporal patterns.

We are very excited to announce the launch of our newly designed WGFTFB website. Visit us at www.wgftfb.org. After one year of hard work and dedication, we are delighted to officially announce the launch on 1st December 2021. We wanted to make the new website faster, easier to navigate, and more user-friendly.
We endeavour to provide our members with the most accurate, up-to-date information and share our knowledge and expertise in the field of fishing technology with knowledge and expertise on issues related to the ecosystem effects of fisheries, especially the evaluation and reduction of the impact of fishing on marine resources and ecosystems and the sustainable use of living marine resources and other topics related to the performance of commercial fishing gears and survey gears.
Our goal with this new website is to provide our members and visitors an easier way to learn about WGFTFB’s researches and services.
Amongst the new features the site contains integrated social media buttons for Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn to foster improved communication with the scientific and private communities. We will be constantly updating our content with helpful information, cutting edge thought leadership, company announcements and client successes in the Blog and News.
For any questions, suggestions, feedback or comments, please e-mail us.
The University of Rostock and the Thuenen Institute of Baltic Sea Fisheries kindly offered to host the meeting in Rostock (Germany; https://goo.gl/maps/Fv3mFtEt5Su9LWxf8 ) from the 28/03/2022 to 01/04/2022.
ICES initiated the rule that all out of house ICES meetings (not in ICES HQ) must follow the respective national and host institutional (CoViD-) guidelines and, if needed, in communication with participants of the meeting.
All out of house meetings need to be organized to enable remote participation to accommodate participation for those unable to travel (irrespective the reason). Therefore, we have no choice but to organize this as a hybrid meeting.
We recognise that as the meeting runs full-day in accordance with a normal physical meeting at the meeting location, it will be more of a challenge for online-participants from other time zones to attend the full meeting. Therefore, and as an essential aspect of all WGFTFB-meetings is the direct contact to colleagues from around the world, we sincerely hope that as many of you as possible are be able to join us in person on location in Rostock.
The 2020 Report of the Workshop on Innovative Fishing Gear (WKING) is now available on the WKING community page.
In response to the EU DG-MARE request, the ICES Workshop on Innovative Fishing Gear (WKING) worked by correspondence to address the request:
develop a suite of criteria to objectively define what an ‘innovative gear’ is;
develop a catalogue of gears considered ‘innovative’, including their objectives, technical specificities and known impacts/benefits (in terms of selectivity on target and non-target species and environmental impact in terms of benefits for, or negative effects on, marine ecosystems and sensitive habitats);
produce a report detailing the process taken and presenting the results;
draft a summary advice on the basis of the report produced.
